Lisa Hoppe (*1988 Rotenburg/Wümme, Germany) is a double bassist, composer, improvisor, band-leader and educator. Her musical works contain a variety of genres and non-genres: Ranging between modern chamber music, free improvisation and jazz in all shapes, she is always striving to put the melodic qualities of the double bass into contemporary context. She studied bass and composition in Bremen (GER) and Bern (CH), and divides her time between New York City and Berlin, Germany.
In 2018 Lisa Hoppe formed her own project, the multi-national ensemble Lisa Hoppe’s Third Reality (USA/ISR/GER), which debut release The Mighty Unlikely was included in the Best Of 2019 list of The New York City Jazz Record. In November 2020 the EP Lightness Of Change was released.
As the co-leader of collective trio Esche she has released three albums and played festivals and tours in Germany, Switzerland, France, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.
Joining forces with trombonist and composer Julia Rüffert, the workshop series MIA came to life in 2019. MIA introduces free improvisation and new ways of communication to people of all ages and musical levels.
Lisa has played concerts at New York Winter Jazz Fest (US), Roulette Brooklyn (US), XJAZZ Festival (D), Vortex London (UK), Aarhus Jazz Festival (DEN), Cully Jazz Festival (CH), Schaffhauser Jazzfestival (CH), CCS Paris (F), Beit Ha’Amudim Tel Aviv (ISR) und Moods, Zürich (CH).
Furthermore she works and has worked with Rich Perry, Tyshawn Sorey, Ben Monder, Rudresh Mahantappa, So Percussion, Chern Hwei Fung, Dmitri Tymoczko, Jessica Pavone, Samantha Boshnack, Ryan Truesdell, Devin Grey, Tal Yahalom, David Leon, Gaya Feldheim Schorr, Louna Dekker Vargas, Aaron Edgcomb, Nick Dunston, Philipp Gropper, Bernhard Bamert, Daniel Weber, Phelan Burgoyne, Emanuele Maniscalco, Laura Schuler, Luzius Schuler, Philipp Schlotter, Fred Bürki and Marena Whitcher.
